The Tzedakah Scholarship

What is tzedakah?

The word tzedakah (pronounced zeh-DAH-kah) comes from the Hebrew, and refers to giving assistance to the poor, needy or other worthy causes. The medieval Jewish philosopher Maimonides recognized various levels of tzedakah, the highest of which enables the recipient to become self-sufficient.

There is certainly a much deeper meaning to the term tzedakah than can be described in a sentence or two. For that reason we have developed a downloadable proposal that includes detailed information about the scholarship as well as the valuable Christian application of tzedakah.

How does the Tzedakah Scholarship work?

As with any endowed scholarship, contributions to the Tzedakah Scholarship will be invested and the earnings used to support specific Northwestern College students who might not otherwise be able to continue their education.

Over 550 scholarships were awarded from sources other than the Tzedakah Scholarship for the coming academic year, and there are always more applicants than funds available. The Tzedakah Scholarship is an exciting opportunity to increase the funds available to students who want the wholeheartedly Christian, academically excellent education that Northwestern offers.

Where do you fit in?

An anonymous—and very generous—donor has contributed $250,000 as a challenge gift to begin the Tzedakah Scholarship. If an additional $250,000 can be raised within the next several months, the very real possibility exists for another $250,000 contribution from this same donor.
