Lady Trappers suffer two losses

Trapper Men’s and Women’s Coaches Searching for Fundamental, Consistent Play From Teams

The Lady Trappers failed to replicate the men’s success over the weekend, losing both of their games in the Snow College Tournament at Ephraim, Utah.

On Friday, the NWC women couldn’t sustain a nine-point halftime lead over Utah State University- Eastern, and fell 85-78 to the Golden Eagles. Dana Bjorhus paced NWC with 21 points, including five 3-pointers, while Hatti Snyder score 11 with eight rebounds. Caitlin Clancy drained 10 points.

“I felt like we really came out strong in the first half, and we could definitely see some improvements from our first few games,” Lady Trappers coach Janis Beal said. “We just need to work on consistency for 40 minutes of play.”

A lack of consistency hurt NWC on Saturday, as Snow College built a 38- 25 halftime lead en route to a 73-42 blowout of the Lady Trappers.

Clancy scored another 10 points against Snow College, and Kealani Sagapolu pulled down an impressive 12 rebounds, but Beal said insufficient free throw shooting (51 percent in the two games) and a high turnover rate hurt her team.

“We’re down 13 points at the half, but if we make free throws, it’s a three-point game before the break,” Beal said. “We had 27 turnovers against USUE and 24 turnovers against Snow, that’s not going to cut it. The games came down to free throws and turnovers.”

The NWC women are now 1-3 on the season heading into the First Bank of Wyoming Shootout at NWC’s Cabre Gym on Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Trappers will battle Bismarck State at 5:30 p.m. Friday before a matchup with Dawson at 3 p.m. Saturday. Bismarck defeated NWC 83-66 in the Lady Trappers’ season opener on Halloween.

“It’ll definitely be nice to be at home on our own court in front of our own fans,” Beal added. “And it’s good that we’ll be playing Bismarck again, because we’ll get a chance to see if we’ve made improvements from the first time we played them.”
