No. 14 Northwest volleyball notches 20th victory of season

The Lady Trappers just keep winning.

After picking up wins Friday and Saturday, the Northwest College volleyball team pushed its winning streak to eight games and upped its impressive run to 15-1 after starting the season 5-6. The No. 14-ranked Trappers are now 20-7 overall this season and a perfect 6-0 in Region IX play after defeating Eastern Wyoming College and Laramie County Community College over the weekend.

“I feel like, one thing about this team, compared to other teams, is they really relish a challenge,” NWC coach Shaun Pohlman said. “That’s one thing I’ve learned about this team and something I really enjoy about this team.”

The Trappers continue to answer challenges as they come, and the weekend’s competition was no different, starting with a 25-6, 25-11, 25-21 sweep of Eastern Wyoming.

Sophomore Megan Huddleston led the Trapper charge, collecting 13 assists, 11 digs and 10 kills as NWC rolled to the win. Pohlman said Huddleston’s teammates made a concerted effort to help Huddleston reach the triple-double, and was impressed with the team’s selflessness in doing so.

“It was awesome to see the whole team want success for one of their teammates,” Pohlman said.

Iona Fields also had 10 kills and added seven digs. Kimber Call posted a team-high 20 assists.

On Saturday, NWC split the first two sets against LCCC before finishing out a 25-14, 17-25, 25-19, 25-12 victory.

Aleksandra Djordjevic recorded a double-double, her fourth in five conference games this season, after collecting 19 kills and 10 digs. Vera Horstmann chipped in with eight kills and four blocks. Huddleston put forth another big effort as well, registering 32 assists, nine digs, five kills and three aces.

Pohlman said the Trappers’ perfect record in region play thus far is reason for the team to be confident with the Region IX tournament just three weeks away (Nov. 5-8), but has also been persistent in keeping his team humble and hungry.

“Playing well right now in the region is great, but the tournament is a different story,” Pohlman said. “As long as the girls don’t come in thinking things are automatic ... if they expect to win, bad things can happen. But if we expect to give our best, work hard and let things fall how they may, we should be OK.

“We certainly know we can win the tournament, but I know and the girls know that it’s not going to be handed to us or any other team.”
