About Music

Music at Northwestern has a long and proud heritage of serving the college and the greater Twin Cities area through its preparation of students to serve in their homes, churches, and communities through Christian leadership. We believe that music is a gift from God and it is our responsibility, individually and collectively, to use that gift in ways that honor Him. Thus, our programs are rigorous, challenging each student to grow intellectually, musically and spiritually, not for personal gain, but to promote the Kingdom of God here on Earth.

The Music Department seeks to provide a music program of excellence and scope that, integrated with biblical studies and interpreted in the light of Christian philosophy, will produce an individual who, as a knowledgeable musician, can perform with musical responsiveness and understanding, has developed aesthetic potential to its highest possible level, and is able to assume the role of proficient music educator for Christian service in church, private education, or public education.

Based upon the above, the department seeks to:

  • Provide opportunities for students to pursue teaching, church-related, and professional performance careers in music based upon a depth of knowledge and skill in the related areas of Music in the Church, Music History, Music Literature, Music Theory, Music Education, and Music Performance;
  • Provide music majors opportunities to become broadly educated through the guided selection of basic courses in Bible and liberal arts and sciences;
  • Give opportunities to students in non-music programs to develop appreciation and skills.
