Northwest Gears Up For 2018

Basketball, Wrestling Return To Action Next Week

Northwest College’s basketball and wrestling teams will resume play over the course of the next week, with each team beginning their conference schedules.

The Lady Trappers basketball team opens 2018 with a pair of games at home, beginning Saturday at 3 p.m. against the Basketball Elite All-Star team. On Wednesday, NWC will host Western Wyoming Community College at 5:30 p.m. 

The Trapper basketball team will have its first game back on Wednesday, hosting Western Wyoming Community College at 7:30 p.m. 

The Trapper wrestling team will return to action in Kearney, Nebraska, on Jan. 12. 

LADY TRAPPER BASKETBALL
The Lady Trappers will play an All-Star game against the Basketball Elite — a team comprised of local ballers and past players — at 3 p.m. Saturday. Head coach Janis Beal scheduled the game to take the place of a Dec. 9 game against Stonechild College that was canceled. 

On Wednesday, the Lady Trappers will head into the conference record portion of the season on a five-game win streak. They posted a 11-4 overall record before the break.

The Lady Trappers are averaging 79.9 points per game , are shooting 44.7 percent from the field (32.8 percent from 3-point range) and 70.8 percent from the charity stripe. The team is also averaging 43.3 rebounds per game. 

TRAPPER BASKETBALL
The Trappers begin 2018 with a 9-7 record, and open Region IX play at home Wednesday against Western Wyoming Community College. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. in the Cabre Gym. 

For the season, the Trappers are averaging 82.5 points per game, and are led in scoring by Lagio Grantsaan with 165 points, followed closely by Umar Jalloh with 161. Grantsaan is averaging 11 points per game, again followed by Jalloh at 10.7.

 

As a team, the Trappers are shooting 45.4 percent from the floor (34.6 percent from behind the 3-point arc) and 64.1 percent from the free throw line. They’re averaging 40.8 rebounds per game. 

TRAPPER WRESTLING
The Trappers are ranked sixth in the nation and on Friday, Jan. 12, they’ll compete in a series of duals. 

The first dual will be against Iowa Central at 9 a.m., the second at 10:30 a.m against UNK-2, the third at noon against Colby Community College and the fourth and final dual at 1:30 p.m. against Bethany College. 

For individual wrestlers, Nodir Safarov is ranked second at 125 pounds, Taylor Jeffries is seventh at 133 pounds, Jeff Oakes is third at 197 pounds and Lisiate Anau is second at 285 pounds.
