POWELL, Wyoming — Comprehensive Class A commercial driver’s license truck driver training will be offered again this fall in Powell. The registration deadline is Monday, Sept. 22.

The training provides tractor-trailer driving fundamentals to students who have minimal or no truck-driving experience. Graduates can expect to learn the essential knowledge and practical skills to qualify for entry-level, supervised over-the-road or in-town positions driving tractor-trailers, heavy-duty trucks, dump trucks and medium-sized delivery trucks.

Truck-driving skills and knowledge will be developed through 104 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on lab time, 14 hours of independent study, 30 hours behind-the-wheel training and the two-hour Wyoming CDL Exam. All behind-the-wheel training is provided with one student per truck.

Classroom instruction focuses on defensive driving, pre- and post-trip vehicle inspection, coupling and uncoupling, vehicle systems and controls, driver communications, speed and space management, visual search techniques, backing and employer relations.

Behind-the-wheel instruction includes backing and parking, braking and slowing, proper turns, basic control, emergency equipment, coupling/uncoupling and vehicle inspection.

Applicants must pass a drug screen and be able to read, write and speak English with 75 percent fluency. They must also have a driving record free of any current serious offenses.

The $5,905 training includes instruction materials, drive time and one testing fee.

Training is provided by SAGE Truck Driving Schools through the Northwest College Center for Training and Development.
