Showalter Music Festival winners announced

P O W E L L, W y o. - Six Big Horn Basin musicians and one from Montana won awards and scholarships at the 31st Showalter Memorial Music Festival held Saturday at Northwest College.

Each of the seven individuals recognized for outstanding musical abilities received a plaque and a $165 scholarship to the 2007 Yellowstone Summer Music Camp. They were also asked to perform in the festival's closing concert.

Cody Middle School fielded the most winners with Jessica Courtney and Cara Schultz winning awards for their vocal solos, and Georgia Kirkpatrick for her flute solo.

Amanda Aagard of Lovell got a winning nod for her vocal solo too, as did Christen Anderson of Worland for a piano solo. Trumpeter Lauren Peterson of Rocky Mountain Middle School was also named a winner, and Sadie Robertus from Fromberg, Mont., played her alto saxophone well enough to claim a plaque and scholarship as well.

Festival clinicians were Marianne Bibbey, Tom Bibbey, Mike Masterson, Craig Olson, Emily Poindexter, Tim Schoessler and Vicki Streeter.

The festival, named after Victor Showalter, a former music professor at Northwest College, is directed by Neil Hansen, an NWC associate professor of music. Students from Wyoming and Montana participated in this year's event.
