Local Area Information

Tensleep Canyon

Tensleep is a great canyon located a little over 2 hours from Powell. The canyon is a mix of limestone with most of the climbing on the north side of the canyon. If you like Wild Iris then is place is a must stop. The climbing is very similar to Wild Iris with the exception that there are not nearly th enumber of people or crowds, you could very likely be the only party you see climbing. From Powell travel to Worland and follow Rt 16 west to the small town of Tensleep. Continue through the town and travel west up the canyon for about 25 minutes and you will see cliffs on the left side with a large pull-off/parking area. If you cross a small bridge you have gone too far. There are trails and please stick to them! There is also camping on the south side of the canyon. Just after the previous small bridge there is a dirt road on the right, follow that road for a few miles and there will be obvious campgrounds along the side, watch for cattle.

You can find route descriptions in the newest version of the Tensleep Guidebook, "Mondo Beyondo". The guide can be purchased at Core Mountain Sports in Cody, Wild Iris climbing shop in Lander or online. For detailed information on Tensleep and Cody climbing, you can stop in the Beta Coffee shop in Cody, they are a wealth of information.
