Science Research InstitutePartnering high school and college students to engage in the sciences togetherThe Science Research Institute (SRI) is a partnership between Northwestern College and Concordia University-St. Paul. The SRI program brings together high school students, college students, high school teachers and college faculty to engage in science and to encourage and better equip students to pursue careers in the sciences. This program is geared towards high school sophomores through seniors, with preference given to students who are traditionally underrepresented in the STEM fileds (students of color, students who are eligilbe for free/reduced lunch, females) The year-long SRI program includes a summer research component and an academic year component. Summer ResearchThe SRI program begins with a summer research component in which teams of high school and college students and high school teachers participate in faculty-led research projects. The research projects this summer will focus on topics in molecular biology and statistics. Students learn science and math content through performing laboratory experiments, group-based problem solving, field exploration and lecture. The institute meets four hours each day for five weeks. Academic Year ComponentDuring the academic year, students meet monthly for activities such as presenting their summer research projects to peers, participating in service learning projects, attending a college admissions session, touring local biotechnology companies and a visiting the Science Museum of Minnesota. The SRI program recruits motivated high school and college students as well as high school teachers to participate beginning in summer 2012. Download our brochure.
