Teacher Education at Northwestern

Teacher Education Curriculum

Teacher education programs at Northwestern are approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching and lead to a recommendation for teacher licensure within the state of Minnesota. All licensure programs are aligned with INTASC standards and the Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice.

Programs are structured to support the development of candidates who:

  • Are educated in the liberal arts
  • Are well prepared in the subject matter they will teach
  • Are exemplary practitioners, applying a deep understanding of effective teaching and learning to serve the needs of all learners
  • Engage in culturally competent practices
  • Build effective partnerships with families
  • Collaborate effectively to support learning within both the school community and the broader professional community
  • Engage in reflective inquiry to support their continual development as professionals
  • Apply a biblical worldview to their professional contexts

A wide range of P–12 school partnerships enable teacher candidates to have extensive interaction with current practitioners in the field while also receiving mentoring from Northwestern faculty.

The following degrees are granted upon satisfactory completion of the total credits specified in the college catalog:

  • Bachelor of Science (all education programs except ESL Education and Music Education)
  • Bachelor of Arts (ESL Education)
  • Bachelor of Music Education

Students in Bachelor of Science programs may choose to graduate with the Bachelor of Arts degree if they establish 1002-level foreign language proficiency.
