January 3—Northwestern vocal faculty member Catherine McCord Larsen will return to teach and perform at the 31st annual Luther Summer Music Academy & Festival (LSM) taking place from June 24 to July 22, 2012 at Lutheran College in Decorah, Iowa.
Over 150 students and musicians grades 8-12 from across the United States attend the residential music training academy. It allows them to develop their talents in a comprehensive keyboard and organ program as well as three major ensembles: orchestra, band and choir. They are accepted based on an application and audition process and are then able to participate in and intensive and diverse program that includes individual lessons with one of the six voice faculty, Voice Lab, musicianship classes, and concert choir. After having taken the core classes and select electives, the students are then able to showcase their talents in the program’s last event: a weeklong festival of performances. Upon her return, McCord Larsen will take on significant roles as a member of the artistic faculty: keep a private studio, teach in the program’s new Voice Lab, serve at department chair, and sing in the Sine Nomine voice faculty ensemble, solo recitals, and worship services (including the LSM Bach Cantata worship service).
A total of 34 artistic faculty members—all revered practicing professional musicians and academicians from across the United States—serve the students. Throughout the four-week long program, the faculty live in residence on the host campus.
