Three men's basketball players named to UMAC All-Conference teams
Mar. 1—A trio of Northwestern College men's basketball players have been named to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference's (UMAC) All-Conference teams.
Brian Lecheler, a senior finance major from Abbotsford, WI, was named the UMAC Player of the Year after a standout senior season that included 12.2 points, 5.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game while making 60 percent of his attempts in 14 league contests. Lecheler was also the UMAC's assist-to-turnover ratio leader, boasting a mark of plus-3.2.
Wade Chitwood, a sophomore accounting major from Grinnell, IA, led Northwestern in scoring with 13.1 points per game. Wrapping up his sophomore campaign, Chitwood also tallied 36 assists throughout the conference schedule while making 45 percent of his attempts.
Tom Gisler. a sophomore accounting major from Stewartville, MN, was off the charts with a 53 percent field goal percentage and a 52 percent mark from behind the three-point line. Also a sophomore, Gisler averaged 11.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
Also receiving a post-season award senior was Nate Thompson, a kinesiology major from Fergus Falls, MN, who was named to the UMAC's All-Defensive Team. Thompson grabbed 3.6 rebounds per game while usually guarding an opponent's best player in the back court.
Northwestern finished 13–1 in UMAC action for the second consecutive year to earn the regular season championship, gaining Eagles head coach Tim Grosz coach of the year honors. Grosz's teams have earned nine conference titles in his 11 years at the team's helm.
