Clubs

Mu Kappa is a fraternal association of the children of missionaries, whose motto is "By MKs for MKs—a chance to embrace our past, while building toward our future."

Mu Kappa of Northwestern College is our chapter of Mu Kappa International. Our purpose is to validate the background and experience of these students, to give them a "family" here in States and to assist them as they adjust to this culture.

God has given each MK a special experience in a different country. Therefore, we encourage sharing and learning about each other's experiences in an open atmosphere of Christian fellowship. Read about Mu Kappa International.

Multicultural Mentor Training

Upper classmen attend two days of cross-cultural and mentor training sessions, prior to Multicultural Orientation, learning how best to assist new students from diverse cultures and to understand challenges that they may encounter. These mentors become friendly, reliable and trustworthy sources of information and assistance for new students. The mentors are paired with new students during  Multicultural Orientation and then follow up weekly with them throughout their first semester.

Multicultural Orientation

Multicultural Orientation provides new students (international, racial and ethnic minorities, and missionary kids) with tools to assist them in adjusting to college life and resources for academic success, as well as the opportunity to meet other students and begin the process of making new friends as they begin college life.

Fall Retreat

This weekend retreat open to all NWC students occurs shortly after classes begin. It is a great opportunity for the new intercultural students to get acquainted with returning students, and for the upcoming events to be introduced and discussed. The retreat is at a local retreat center, with the first afternoon being a time for team-building games and challenging activities. A special speaker provides a presentation in the evening, and there is a time for worship, singing, and games often around the campfire. This event seals many bonds of friendship and provides a safe environment for new students to feel welcomed and included.

National Christian Multicultural Student Leadership Conference (NCMSLC)

A group of students and advisors attend this three-day event annually, with the Center for Global Reconciliation and Cultural Education funding the majority of the expenses. Each year the conference is hosted by a different Christian college. The purpose of the conference is to provide participants with knowledge, skills, and understanding of intercultural challenges and realities at Christian colleges, particularly in relation to biblical reconciliation. Workshops, many led by students, provide insights and tools for cultural competency in order to enhance student leadership skills.

Multicultural Festivals

These student planned events highlight and celebrate the various heritages (Asian, African American, European, Native American, Hispanic, and Latin) with cultural displays, foods, music, worship experiences, and various types of presentations. The entire NWC community is invited to attend. The staff supports the students in their preparation to host these special evenings.

Twin Cities Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast

Twenty faculty, staff, and students attend this annual Twin Cities event. This is a great opportunity for our students to hear nationally acclaimed speakers, connect with community leaders, and share in Dr. King’s vision for the "beloved community." Learn more at mlkbreakfast.org

Black History Month Celebration

Emphasis on African-American and Pan-African Culture, heritage, and concerns are the focus of NWC chapels, programs, and events during the month of February each year. Special guests are invited to speak and provide presentations to the campus community.

Mu Kappa Regional Retreat

Mu Kappa is a national fraternity for missionary kids (MKs). A Midwest Regional Retreat is held annually, usually the last weekend in January. Many of our MK students greatly appreciate this opportunity to bond with other MKs throughout the region. NWC provides advisors, funding, and transportation to the event. The MKs have a very special bond and understanding of each other’s unique experiences—no matter what their cultural backgrounds might be.
