God and Math: How they come together at Northwestern...

Getting your degree in mathematics or engineering opens opportunities for well-paid, challenging and enjoyable careers.

Our field has a legacy of advances in aviation, computers and their applications, economic forecasting, and the development of new materials. If you like science or mathematics or find those skills come naturally to you, come and find your place at Northwestern.

We can give you a degree supported by so much more than head knowledge.

Why is northwestern the best place to study?
  • We give you a biblical foundation with specific courses on historical, philosophical and faith-related issues to cultivate awe for our Creator and the natural world.
  • We immediately involve you in outstanding opportunities like advanced coursework and research, and training with MATLAB software.Mathematics and Engineering
  • We emphasize real-life learning with student internships, team competitions, mathematics conferences and conducting research.
  • Our professors have done amazing work in their field coming from places like  the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Defense. We have a former statistician for the state of Ohio and a globally accomplished engineer with numerous patents.
Where can you go with us?
  • Engineering Dual Degree: We partner with the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities so you can earn two bachelor’s degrees—one from Northwestern and another from the University of Minnesota, in five years.

  • Mathematics Education: Prepare for a career teaching math in grades 5–12 at public or private schools.
  • Mathematics: Apply mathematical expertise to real-world problems. Choose between our Applied Mathematics Program or our Traditional Mathematics Program.

After graduation, you can dive right into the field (to name a few careers):

  • Actuary
  • College Mathematics Professor
  • Cryptoanalyst
  • Modeling and Simulation Analyst
  • Mathematical Scientist
  • Mathematician
  • Operations Research Analyst
  • Quantitative Analyst
  • Software/Web Designer
  • Statistician

Real math

“I really like that what I’m learning can be applied to every-day situations instead of just solving problems without knowing what someone can use it for. The math courses at Northwestern enable students to think at an advanced abstract level.”

Dana Smith ’12, applied mathematics major

Intellectual independence

"When I can get my students to the point where they’re willing to interact and even question what I’m doing and say, ‘I don’t think that’s right,’—that’s even better because they’re not afraid to interject their ideas and thoughts into a project. Those moments are really great.”

Matthew Hyre, Ph.D., Engineering Professor Graduate of West Point and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

What will I do beyond classes?
  • Alpha Mathematics: Tutor other students on general education mathematics courses
  • Math and Engineering Research for the Real World: Conduct advanced research with a professor in biomedicine, environmental technologies and manufacturing.
  • Mathematics Competitions: Participate in local, regional, national and/or international mathematics competitions.
  • Conference Presentations: Attend local and national conferences and present.
  • Summer Research Institute: Partner with faculty to work with high school students.
  • Teaching Assistantship
