Gooseberry Creek

Quick Facts
  • The Gooseberry Creek rest area is the only public service area in the 52 miles stretch of highway between Meeteetse and Thermopolis.
  • The Wyoming's Wildlife interpretative sign at the rest area points out that "doubtless" many prairie rattlesnakes inhabit the country around the rest area, but there is little to fear from these "fascinating and secretive" pit vipers.
  • One of the last major buffalo hunts in the Big Horn Basin took place in 1874 on Gooseberry Creek. Chief Washakie's tribe killed 125 buffalo there.
