Trapper Wrestling District Bound

NWC To Compete At NJCAA Rocky Mountain District Championships

The Northwest College wrestling team will compete for the Rocky Mountain District Championships title in Rock Springs Saturday. The top wrestler in each weight class will advance to the NJCAA National Championship in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Feb. 23-24. 

Participants who don’t win their weight class have a chance to attend the national tournament as wildcards.

The three teams who will be competing are Northwest College, Western Wyoming Community College and Northeastern Junior College. 

Western Wyoming is ranked fourth in the country, with Northwest ranked fifth; between the two teams, there are a total of 10 nationally ranked wrestlers.

The Trappers have the following nationally ranked athletes:

  • Nodir Safarov, a freshman from Bekabad City, Uzbekistan, is ranked second in the 125-pound weight class.
  • Tate Allison, a redshirt freshman from Moorcroft, ranks seventh in the 157-pound weight class.
  • Jeff Oakes, a sophomore from Battle Mountain, Nevada, ranks fourth in the 184-pound weight class.
  • Lisiate Anau, a sophomore from Pocatello, Idaho, ranks third in the 285-pound weight class. 

Western Wyoming has the following nationally ranked wrestlers:

  • Jaxon Cole, No. 8 at 125 pounds
  • Kenny Astle, No. 2 at 149 pounds
  • Tucker Tomlinson, No. 5 at 165 pounds
  • Matt Hebel, No. 3 at 174 pounds
  • Connor Kirkland, No. 3 at 184 pounds
  • Wade French, No. 7 at 197 pounds 

Wrestling will begin at noon in the Rushmore Gymnasium. Tickets are $5 for the day and all seniors and students are free.
