About the Phlebotomy Occupation

Job Duties of a Phlebotomist

  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
  • Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods
  • Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies
  • Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into a computer
  • Organize or clean blood-drawing trays, ensuring that all instruments are sterile and all needles, syringes, or related items are of first-time use
  • Collect specimens at specific time intervals for tests, such as those assessing therapeutic drug levels
  • Transport specimens or fluid samples from collection sites to laboratories
  • Process blood or other fluid samples for further analysis by other medical professionals
  • Provide sample analysis results to physicians to assist diagnosis
  • Conduct standard tests, such as blood alcohol, blood culture, oral glucose tolerance, glucose screening, blood smears, or peak and trough drug levels tests

About the NWC Phlebotomy Courses

Students learn the practice of phlebotomy and are provided with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions.  Emphasis is placed on infection prevention, universal precautions, proper patient identification, specimen acquisition, handling, and processing.  Quality assurance, professional conduct, and federal regulatory issues will be covered as well.  Offered in a hybrid format, students complete course work online, and attend face-to-face labs and clinicals.  Successful completion of the phlebotomy course makes students eligible to sit for the NHA CPT Exam
