Learning from mistakes and getting into the college rodeo mindset were constant teaching points from coach Del Nose in Northwest College rodeo team’s fall season.

The team showed improvement from the season’s early goings last weekend, taking third at the University of Montana Western rodeo with a score of 300 points.

“They learned from their freshman mistakes and are coming along pretty good,” Nose said.

Heading into the winter break, the men’s team overall jumped into fourth in the region with a total of 1,134 points. These points will carry over to spring rodeos once they return to action in April.

The NWC women remain in sixth place with a total of 25 points.

Competing in Dillon, Montana, on Friday and Saturday, the Trappers were led by William Hughes, who won bull riding for the second consecutive week, along with strong showings from Sylais York in team roping header and Spencer Gordon in team roping heeler; York and Gordon each placed second.

Other top placers included Paden Woolstenhulme taking third in team roping header and Kagen Wallace taking third in team roping heeler.

Hughes will enter into the winter break as the overall bull riding leader for the Big Sky Region.

Woolstenhulme is third overall for the men’s all around, 15th in tie down roping, fifth in steer wrestling and third in team roping header.

Other ranked Trappers include Cole Biggers in seventh for bronc riding; Logan Smith in ninth for tie down roping; York in a tie for seventh in team roping header; Hagen Wallace third for team roping heeler; Gordon in a tie for seventh in team roping heeler and Taggart Hammons ninth in team roping heeler.

Nose said the team will look at the mistakes that were consistent over the fall season and look to adjust those issues over the winter break.

The team will hold a fundraiser in February, and practice until returning to action at an April rodeo in Bozeman.
