Returning home for a pit stop, the Northwest College women’s soccer team put away the visiting Lamar Lopes 4-1 at Trapper Field on Saturday. NORTHWEST 4, LAMAR 1Northwest was scheduled to take on Northeastern Junior College on Friday, but a cancellation meant the action started on Saturday for the Trappers (6-4 overall, 2-1 Region IX) against the Lopes (2-4-3 overall, 1-2-1 Region IX).
The Trappers got on the board first, when Pressly Taylor scored to give Northwest the lead 19 minutes into the game.
That lead was expanded quickly, as Autumn Wilson scored to give Northwest a 2-0 lead just five minutes later.
Lamar did not go away quietly, placing a perfect shot over the outstretched hand of Trapper keeper Anina Gut to cut the lead down to 2-1 with six minutes left in the half.
That lead held going into the half, with Powell outshooting the Lopes 9-2 to start the match.
Heading into the second half the shot barrage continued from the Trappers, creating strong opportunities that eventually found their way past the Lamar keeper once more.
Taylor got her second of the game with 26 minutes left, restoring the two goal lead for the Trappers that helped give Northwest breathing room.
Despite the two goal lead Northwest continued to press the initiative, but it did not pay off until the tail end of the match.
Abigail Allen knocked in a goal with just seconds remaining, to give Northwest a 4-1 victory.
The Trappers finished with 25 shots compared to five for Lamar, while Audette Rodolph finished with two saves in the second half — the NWC keepers split time — to help Powell keep out three shots from the Lopes.
REST PERIODNorthwest will now stay at home until next weekend, entering a period of rest and recovery before heading on the road for the longest trip on the schedule this season.
After the rest period, Northwest will make the trip to southern Colorado — taking on Trinidad and Otero in a set of matches. That road trip will be followed by a pair of home matches in Powell on Oct. 6 and 7 to take on Casper College and Gillette College.
