A new season for the Northwest women’s basketball team kicked off this past weekend, as the Trappers headed down to Windsor, Colorado, to take part in the Rocky Mountain College Jamboree.

The scrimmages had the Trappers coming up against the Air Force prep team, Bismarck State College and Barton Community College.

“The scrimmages went good,” coach Lauren Davis said. “I think we got so much out of going like we did last year. We have so many freshmen coming on, only two returners and it was good for the freshmen to see the pace.”

Heading into this season there will be a lot of new players on the team, with Darla Hernandez and Nayeli Acosta being the only two returners from last year’s team.

Davis said that Hernandez and Acosta showed a presence on the court that helped to calm down Northwest over the weekend, and she hopes they will bring a strong leadership to the team this season.

Only one other player on the team has college experience, Marin Abe, who transferred to Northwest after a strong freshman year at Genesee Community College in Batavia, New York.

“She was good this weekend, but coming into a new region and a new division it was still new for her too,” Davis said.

Early on in the season, Davis is hoping to establish a strong press break with her team after not putting one in early last year.

“I just want them to feel prepared when we go play Rocky next Wednesday,” Davis said.

She hopes the team will continue to improve each and every practice, while moving forward and trying to grow as a team throughout the preseason and heading into the regular season.

Northwest will head to Billings on Wednesday to take on the Rocky Mountain varsity team, hoping to continue gaining experience against four-year players before the season officially tips off in three weeks.
