When fine arts major Cydney Barrus was presented with an unexpected opportunity last
semester, she didn’t hesitate to take action. As one who knows the importance of campus
and community involvement, she’s always ready to embrace a new challenge. Throughout
her time at Northwest College, Barrus has become an integral part of campus, serving
as an Admissions Trailblazer, Phi Theta Kappa Recording Officer and President of Fellowship,
as well as President and Treasurer of the Art Club. But, when she manages to find
free time outside of the studio, she enjoys volunteering, Gestalt Studio’s open jam sessions, bike riding, people watching, camping and drawing.
How did you learn about the opportunity to study in Utah?
In August 2017 another NWC student and I made a special trip to Utah to participate
in a two-day charcoal drawing workshop that Casey Childs (artist and NWC’s 2018 Distinguished Alumnus) offered. I fully intended on returning
to Utah for more of his workshops, but Casey unexpectedly reached out to me not long
after the fall semester started and asked me if I would be interested in studying
with him after I was finished at NWC. I completed the art coursework at Northwest,
packed my things and moved to Utah to seize the opportunity.
How did you know Northwest College was a good fit for you?
I became an art major, and the NWC Art Department became a second home. I knew my
time spent there would be worthwhile because the faculty and staff genuinely cared.
It was obvious from the beginning.
What do you enjoy most about your major?
Not that I completely know what I have gotten myself into yet, but I am fascinated
by the vocabulary, the simplicity, complexity and sensitivity of art and things art
related. I am overwhelmed by how much there is to learn, but I love learning.
What advice do you have for future NWC students?
If I were to do it all over again, I would get more sleep. Avoid sleep deprivation.
Barrus is currently wrapping up her time in Utah and is set to graduate from NWC this
spring. This fall, she will attend the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in Connecticut.
