Barista class brewing in Cody for two weeks in June

CODY, Wyo. - It isn’t too late to sign up for Barista training coming to Cody in early June through a partnership between the Park County Library’s Biblio Bistro and the Northwest College Cody Center for Training and Development (CTD).

The class meets from 6-9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, June 7, 9, 14 and 16. Students will be required to complete three hours of practicum, to be scheduled with the instructor on the first night of class.

Biblio Bistro Manager David Koch, who will conduct the training, said the class is designed to prepare graduates for immediate employment preparing and serving coffee drinks in a coffee shop, kiosk or restaurant. He said individuals who appreciate good coffee but aren’t looking for a barista-type job might also enjoy the class and the specific knowledge to be gleaned from it.

Before brewing their first drop, students will get an introduction to the history, harvesting, picking, processing, sorting, grading and classifying of coffee beans. They’ll learn about coffee-growing regions and their qualities, the vernacular of brewed coffees (weights, grinding, roasts, decaf process, coffee descriptions), espresso basics (brewing a shot, testing the grind) and steaming milk (including chocolate and soy). They’ll also master flavor profiles, recipe charts, iced drinks and syrup measurements.

In addition to learning how to make a great cup of coffee, students will also learn key guest services concepts (quality standards, speed of service standards, teamwork and flow of store) and maintenance procedures/requirements for the various tools of their trade.

Students who attend all sessions and pass an assessment during the final session will receive a NWC CTD certificate.

There are still a few spots left in the class. The $50 cost per person includes a manual and apron.
