POWELL, Wyo. - Brass players are polishing their instruments for the 2014 Northwest College Festival Trumpet and Trombone Festival Saturday, Feb. 1.

Scott Meredith, assistant professor of trumpet at the University of Wyoming and current collegiate vice president of the Wyoming Music Educators Association, will tutor area trumpeters. Trombone players will learn from guest artist John Roberts, who teaches low brass and jazz at Montana State University-Billings.

The day-long event features a warm-up with the artists at 10 a.m., clinician presentations at 1:15 p.m. and master classes at 2:30 p.m. Instruments from Hill Music will also be on display.

Big Horn brass players are invited to improve their playing through this rare opportunity and to contribute their sounds to the trumpet and trombone ensembles concert. Rehearsal begins at 4 p.m.in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.

Robert Rumbolz, associate professor of music at NWC, encourages brass players across the Big Horn Basin to email or call him at 307-754-6426 to get instructions for downloading the ensemble music. NWC low brass instructor Rick Parmer can be reached by email or at 307-202-0438.

“All players high school age and older who want to improve their technique or who just want to blow their horns are welcome,” Rumbolz said. “There’s a lot to learn from these guest artists and clinicians.”

Codirected by Rumbolz and Parmer, the festival culminates in a free public concert at 7 p.m. in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.

The festival is supported in part by a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council, through funding from the Wyoming State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
