POWELL, Wyo. - Northwest College learned last week that its student-produced newspaper, the Northwest Trail, was chosen as this year's recipient of the prestigious national College Press Freedom Award.

Sponsored by the Student Press Law Center (SPLC) and the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP), the award is presented to only one college or university in the nation annually.

SPLC officials said the Trail was receiving the honor for its coverage last year of several high profile events at Northwest College, including news about the new soccer teams and the contracting of a mediator to visit campus.

Duane Fish, chair of the Communications Division at NWC, said, “The ability to publish a weekly paper at a community college is difficult enough, but to do so in a professional manner that catches the attention of a national organization is incredible.  I couldn’t be more proud of our journalists.”

The award, a plaque recognizing the Trail’s achievements, will be presented as part of an Oct. 30 awards ceremony during the National College Journalism Convention in Louisville, Ky.
