There may not have been soup lines in Powell during the Great Depression, but there was definitely one Tuesday night, Nov. 18, outside Plaza Diane. The line of people waiting for a bowl of hot soup snaked around the corner of the block during the Empty Bowls fundraiser sponsored by NWC art students.

Close to 250 people stood in line to pay $10 for dinner and the hand-made ceramic bowl it was served in. The bowls sold out in less than an hour, raising over $2,500 for the Powell Loaves and Fishes.

AUDIO EXTRA: While the tables were being cleared after the event, art instructor Elaine DeBuhr said she and her students were amazed at the success of the project and speculated about the reasons for the overwhelming community response.
