The NWC rodeo team began the season with an impressive performance. Both the men's and women's team placed second overall in a field of seven teams in their first meet in Cody on Sept. 6 and 7. The tournament was to begin on Friday night at the Cody Stampede arena outdoors, but soft turf after heavy rain cancelled that performance.
The events took place at the Heart Mountain Arena, the team's practice facility.
"This is a great bunch of kids," said Del Nose, coach of the team. "And the team will be stronger in the spring. We have a few people sitting out for transfer reasons."
On the first day in the men's all-around, Cole Thoreson placed fourth, and the second day Casey Good came in second and Tyson Twitchel placed third. In the women's all-around on the first day, Steffani Hofrichter placed third and Cody Proctor placed fourth. The second day, Proctor placed second.
In the saddle bronc Gus Thoreson placed third and Cole Thoreson came in fourth. Tucker Zingg placed fourth in the bull riding event. In tie down roping, Good placed fifth and Twitchell seventh. Good also placed second, Matthew Wznick fifth, and Cole Thoreson 12th in team roping header.
In team roping heeler, Twitchell placed second, Mark Hamlin placed fifth, and Travis Winters took 12th. In barrel racing, Proctor took third and Tia Brannan and Michelle McMurdo tied for 12th.
In breakaway roping, Proctor placed seventh and Hofrichter placed eighth. Brannan placed sixth and Hofrichter placed eighth in goat tying.
