Trapper Men Win Last Rodeo Of Fall Season

Northwest Men Ranked Second In Big Sky Region, Women Fourth

Closing out the fall portion of its season in style, the Northwest College men’s rodeo team won the University of Montana — Western Rodeo in Dillon, Montana; the NWC women, meanwhile, placed fifth. 

With the fall season now over, head coach Del Nose said he is “proud of the guys [and] the girls are doing great.” 

TRAPPERS
In Dillon, the men’s rodeo team earned the top spot with 640 points. University of Montana — Western took second with 540 points and the University of Montana placed third with 435 points.

The win cut the distance between the Trappers and the Montana State University in the Big Sky Region, trimming the Bobcats’ lead from 651 to 446 points. (MSU has 2,961 points and NWC 2,515). 

“[The] kids had a good rodeo,” said Nose. “I was excited about that, kids narrowed the gap between us and MSU.” 

Bubba Boots finished second in the all-around with 270 points by taking third in steer wrestling, with a time of 10.3 seconds, and placing first in team roping alongside partner Matthew Williams, with a time of 13.8 seconds. 

Calvin Shaffer placed fifth in saddle bronc with 66 points. 

In the bull riding event, Caleb McMillan took second with 153 points and Jake Davis placed third with 77. 

Within the Big Sky Region, McMillan jumped from second to lead in all-around with 896.50 points and Boots dropped from second place to third with 784.50. 

Will Powell of Montana State University sits in second place for all-around with 830.50 points. 

In individual events, McMillan ranks second in bull riding with 367.50 points (jumping up two spots), fourth in tie-down roping with 230 points and sixth for saddle bronc with 189 points. 

Boots is in 15th place in tiedown roping with 65 points, third in steer wrestling with 314 points (moving up two places) and regained the lead with Williams in tiedown roping with 405 points. In tiedown roping, the second place team has 293 points.

Schaffer is in fifth place in the Big Sky Region in saddle bronc with 200 points. 

In bull riding, Marc Dorendorf is in seventh place with 100 points, Jake Davis is tied for ninth with 90 points and Kolten Moss is in 13th place with 30 points. 

In bareback riding, Orrin Ouska is sitting in ninth place with 60 points. 

The team of Dawson Cvancara and Jake Griffel are in sixth place with 158.5 points.

“Hopefully we can follow up the spring season [with] the same thing we did last year,” Nose said, referring to the Trappers seizing the Big Sky Region title in the 2016-17 season. “That’s what I’m hoping for.” 

LADY TRAPPERS
The NWC women’s rodeo team placed fifth in Dillon and is sitting in fourth place in the Big Sky Region.

Braily Newman placed sixth in goat tying with a time of 15.8 seconds. 

In the Big Sky Region, Brook Winward is in fifth place in breakaway roping with 165.5 points and Scout Yochum ranks 13th place in goat tying with 88 points. 

Nose said both the men’s and women’s rodeo teams are in “better shape now than this time last year.” 

The rodeo teams will resume action in the spring to complete their overall season.
