Bubba Boots said he was a ready for a big rodeo and felt his Northwest College team was ready for a strong spring debut.
He was right on both counts last week as the Trappers used back-to-back rodeos in Bozeman hosted by Montana State to make jumps in the Big Sky Region team standings.
When the weekend concluded the men were ranked second, moving up from third, and the women moved up a spot to sixth.
“It was pretty darned good,” said coach Del Nose of his squad’s performance.
After the two rodeos Lane Lahaye was leading the region’s all-around and Boots, whose given name is not Bubba, but Teigen, was sitting third.
Jesse Nelson is fourth in bareback riding, Casey Fredericks fifth in bull riding and Tyler Sterner seventh. Boots is ranked fourth in tie-down roping and Lahaye eighth. That duo is also two-three in steer wrestling.
Shawn Bird (heeler) and Lahaye (header) have teamed up and lead the team roping for the region.
On the women’s side Taylor Werbelow (12th), Sierra Lyons (14th) and Shelby Mann (15th) are in the regional barrel racing rankings.
Lyons (9th) and Tori Lewis (10th) are in the goat-tying standings.
“There was a lot of electricity there,” Nose said of the atmosphere for the first spring rodeos.
Although the site was the same, two rodeos were scored over four days.
Boots was second in the all-around in Rodeo 1, fourth in tie-down roping and second in steer wrestling.
“He was on,” Nose said of Boots.
Lahaye won the steer wrestling.
In Rodeo 2 Boots won the tie-down roping and placed second in the all-around. Nelson was second in bareback. Lahaye and Bird grabbed second in team roping and Werbelow was fifth in barrel racing. Lewis finished third in goat tying.
During the off-season the Trappers participated in several clinics and Nose said that hard work paid off.
“We put a lot of hours in,” he said. “They absorbed it and we got some results out of it. It was a very worthwhile weekend.”
