Dodge City volleyball coach coming to Northwest

POWELL, Wyo. - Shaun Pohlman, head volleyball coach at Dodge City Community College (DCCC)  in Kansas, is trading his Conquistador helmet for a Trapper coonskin cap to coach the Northwest College Volleyball Team.

Pohlman expects to be moved to Powell before April 1.

“I keep looking for the ‘too good to be true’ shoe to fall,” Pohlman said about the position. “On a professional level, I’ll be stepping into a solid program that offers more recruiting power, and on a personal level, my family will now be closer to our hometown and family (Twin Falls, Idaho).”

NWC Athletic Director Andy Ward said Pohlman was a good fit for Northwest.

“He’s got lots of energy and the emphasis he places on academics is outstanding,” Ward said.

Pohlman is already “putting the pieces together” in the recruiting puzzle and hopes to bring at least a couple of his DCCC players with him to Northwest.

The DCCC Volleyball Team was a Division II team when he took the reins in 2007. In just one year he led the last place Division II team into a respectable Division I finish, earning co-coach of the year in the Jayhawk Conference. The Conquistador’s win-loss record flipped from 4-31 to 21-19, tying for sixth place in the nation in academics.

In 2008, Pohlman’s team was one of nine two-year colleges to receive the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Team Academic Award; repeating that in 2009 as one in only eight colleges to receive the award.

Pohlman’s Conquistadors wrapped up the 2010 season with a 27-10 record overall; posting 11-3 in their conference.

His coaching career began in club and school volleyball when he lived in Idaho. At Filer School District, Pohlman was the high school assistant varsity coach from 2005-06 and middle school head coach from 2005-07. At the same time, he developed a club program from the ground up for the community to participate in and build skills.

His passion for volleyball began in 2003 when he was a setter for the Idaho State Men’s Volleyball Club. As the club’s president, he led his team to a bronze national championship and personal recognition on the second team all-conference.

Pohlman replaces Flavia Siqueira who resigned in November.
