NWC Wraps Up Rough Weekend
The Northwest College Trappers escaped from Taylorsville,Utah, with one win in three games over the weekend, thanks to a Saturday 73-67 victory over previously undefeated Snow College. The Trappers also lost to Salt Lake and Eastern Utah during weekend play.
“It was a rough weekend,” said Trapper coach Janis Beal, whose team began the three-day tournament falling 63-44 to Eastern Utah. Northwest was also defeated 100-53 by Salt Lake.
“Ultimately, both the Eastern Utah and Salt Lake games boil down to us just not coming out with the energy and intensity that we needed,” Beal said. “We had too many turnovers against a 2-3 zone against Eastern. Then, against a very good Salt Lake team, we essentially spotted them 20 points at the start of the game. We can’t do that.”
The Trappers were doomed by cold shooting as well against Eastern, connecting on just 27.1 percent of their shots from the floor. The Trappers’ lack of aggression was also evident at the foul line, where the team took just 14 attempts, including just two in the second half as Eastern transformed a seven-point halftime edge into a double-digit win.
“Any time the other team makes more free throws than you attempt, that’s not a good sign,” Beal said. “We didn’t attack well enough to get those calls and give ourself a chance to shoot.”
Northwest was also victimized by a 31-point, 10-rebound performance by Eastern’s Priscila Santos.
“They basically beat us with one player,” Beal said. “We didn’t react well on defense.”
On Friday, Salt Lake put six players in double figures against the Trappers.
“You can’t come out flat against a team like Salt Lake,” Beal said. “You have to come out and play every possession, and we didn’t do that.”
The Trappers also struggled on the boards, suffering a 50-25 rebounding disadvantage.
“We gave them a lot of second chance put-back opportunities, and we didn’t get very many of those,” said Beal.
The frustration of the first two nights emerged in the first half against Snow as the Trappers erupted for a 42-20 halftime lead.
“The girls did a great job of coming out after two losses and playing,” Beal said. “Snow is a good team, and we did a good job of being ready to play. Now we just need to learn how to build on a lead, because I think we came out in the second half and played timid and trying not to lose.”
The Trappers, now 4-2, play at Billings against the Rocky Mountain College JV on Wednesday. This weekend, the team hosts Williston and the NWC Alumni team.
