Trapper women win big

NWC Resumes Play With Sub-Region Win

The Northwest College women’s basketball team returned to the floor after almost a month off and looked right at home. The Trappers used a big early run to post a 95-70 victory at Little Big Horn College on Saturday.

The Trappers improve to 10-6 with the win.

“The first thing was that it was good to have a game since we hadn’t played since Dec. 10,” said Trapper head coach Janis Beal. “It was a nice game as well in that we were able to get everyone out there and playing during the contest.”

Northwest came out with a lot of energy as the team scored 50 points in the first half and held a 50-30 advantage at intermission. The Trappers maintained that edge throughout second-half play.

Five players finished the night in double figures for the Trappers, including Kennedy Allen, who finished with a double-double after scoring 17 points and hauling down 10 rebounds. Leslie Thronburg added 15 points. Layana de Souza finished the night with 14 points. Taylor Ryan had 13 points and Mariah Duran knocked home 12 points as Northwest College improved to 10-6 for the season and 2-1 in Region IX North play.

“We came out really well and played well defensively early on,” said Beal. “The other thing we did well was hit the glass. Having a 55-42 edge on the boards was nice.”

If there was any sort of a holiday hangover, Beal indicated it may have come at the defensive end of the floor.

“We need to move our feet a little more and keep our hands off,” said Beal, whose team was out-shot 37 to 19 at the free throw line.

The Trappers play their first home contest of the 2012 calendar year this Saturday when nationally-ranked Casper College comes to town. Tip time is 3 p.m. at Cabre Gymnasium.

“Hopefully, we can play hard every possession,” said Beal. “Casper’s at the top of the North sub-region. With them coming to our place, hopefully we can play them tough. You can’t take time off against Casper. You have to play every possession.”
