Northwest Women's Basketball Tallies Split In Utah Tournament

The Northwest College women’s basketball team split a pair of games at the Salt Lake Community College Tournament over Thanksgiving weekend.

The SLCC Bruins (10-0) are ranked No. 7 in the country and won their tournament. The Lady Trappers suffered a 93-60 loss to the Lady Bruins in the tourney opener on Friday at Taylorsville, Utah.

It was a tough start for the Lady Trappers as they fell behind early and never erased the deficit. The host team had five players score in double figures in the lopsided win.

Jacey Shaw led the way statistically for NWC with 15 points and eight rebounds. Shaw also canned a pair of 3-pointers in the setback.

Chandler Rose scored nine points and Larissa Knight added eight. This was the season debut for Knight, who had missed all of the team’s previous games with a back injury.

Kealani Sagapolu scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.

“Salt Lake is very good and they haven’t lost,” Northwest coach Janis Beal said. “As far as good players all the way around, Salt Lake is right up there.”

Northwest played Utah State University-Eastern on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Trappers bounced back from their opening loss and posted a 71-68 win.

Sagapolu used her height advantage on the inside to lead the Trappers to victory with a game-high 21 points and 22 rebounds. The strong play in the low post allowed Northwest to take a 37-30 lead at halftime.

Shaw added 14 points and canned a trey. Shelby Nicholson was also in double figures for the Lady Trappers with 10 points.

Northwest College (5-7) plays Chemeketa Community College in the opening round of the College of Southern Idaho Tournament at Twin Falls, Idaho this weekend. The Lady Trappers are scheduled to play three games in the tournament.
