NWC Women Split Games On The Road

NWC Women Split Games On The Road

One week after losing to Eastern Wyoming College at home 72-61, the Northwest College women’s basketball team traveled to Torrington and sent the game into overtime Saturday before losing 83-80.

On Friday, NWC beat North Platte Community College 76- 63 on the first day of the EWC-hosted tournament.

“I thought that one thing that was huge for us was we took care of the ball a lot better,” said Janis Beal, head coach.

In their first meeting, the Trappers had 33 turnovers against the Lancers; on Saturday, they cut it to 20.

Julynne Silva was high scorer with 19 points against Eastern. Dallas Petties was next with 16 points, and the third player in double figures was Dani McManamen with 12, including four for four from the free throw line.

All weekend McManamen only missed one free throw, making her 31-out-of-32 in free throws in the last four games.

Petties was six for eight from the free-throw line.

Overall as a team, NWC was 67.7 percent from the free throw line, 42.9 percent from the 3 point line and 45.9 percent from the field.

McManamen led in rebounds with nine and in steals with four.

Jesse Lessard came in second with three steals.

Against North Platte on Friday, the ladies were 69.6 percent from the free-throw line, 54.5 percent on 3 point attempts and overall 41.5 from the field.

“Our girls did a good job of coming out strong in the beginning,” said Beal. “Then in the second half we got a little sloppy.”

At halftime NWC was up by 23 points, but only won the game by 13 points.

Lauren Hinckley was one of five players to score in double digits with 17 points. Mattie Creager and McManamen each had 13 points.

“(Hinckley) did a great job of just kind of being an outside force for us,” said Beal.

Domenica Gomes had 11 and Silvia had 10.

Creager, McManamen and Silva led in rebounds with nine each and Gomes was right behind them with eight. Gomes also led in steals with four.

The final thoughts from Coach Beal from a coach’s standpoint in looking at who the opponents were and how the team played, she was more pleased with the effort and drive the Lady Trappers showed in the loss to Eastern than in the win against North Platte.

“I thought the girls really came and played hard and competed against Eastern. Eastern is a good team,” said Beal. “We did make some corrections from when we played them a week ago. So I was pleased with the effort there.”

NWC basketball will be off this weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday but will play at home on Tuesday, Nov. 29 against Rocky Mountain College JV at 5:30 p.m.
