Trapper Women Go 1-2 Over Three Days Of Competition

Northwest Turns The Table On Bismarck, N.D. To Open Shootout

NWC women’s basketball faced three opponents in three days, beating Bismarck on Friday, but losing to Salt Lake Community College on Thursday and to Eastern Wyoming College on Saturday. 

Things started Thursday evening against Salt Lake Community College, ranked sixth in the nation. 

Against Salt Lake, NWC was the first team to put points on the board. The Trappers led through the low-scoring first period until a 3-point play put Salt Lake ahead 3-2 at the 7:19 mark. 

Salt Lake kept the 1-point lead until 5:19 minutes left in the first, when Mattie Creager made a pair of free throws to put NWC up by one. 

At the end of the first quarter, Northwest still held a 10-8 lead. 

In the second quarter, NWC and Salt Lake would battle it out, going back and forth to tie the game at 22 at halftime. 

Throughout the game, the score was tied seven times, with nine lead changes. 

Salt Lake scored first in the third quarter and slowly pulled away to take the 57-43 win over the Trappers. 

“Very pleased with the effort the girls brought,” said Janis Beal, NWC head coach. “But we just didn’t complete the whole game. Fourth quarter, we stopped doing a lot of the things that had kept us in the game.” 

As a team, the Trappers were 50 percent from the free throw line, 28.6 percent on 3-point shots and 47.2 percent from the floor. 

Lauren Hinckley led the Trappers with nine points; close behind her was Dallas Petties with eight and Kira Marlow with seven. 

For rebounds, Dani McManamen led with six, having five defensive and one offensive board; Petties had two offensive and two defensive for a total of four. 

On Friday, the first day ofthe First Bank of Wyoming Shootout, Northwest took on Bismarck State College and beat them 78-70; the Trappers had lost a 94-65 decision to Bismarck on their previous encounter on Nov. 4. 

As a team, the Trappers shot 67.9 percent from the free throw line, 43.3 percent from the floor and 11.1 percent on 3-pointers. 

Individually, McManamen went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line — racking up 20 points — while Jessie Lessard went 2-for-2. Julynne Silva scored 13 points and Marlow 12.

Petties led with 10 rebounds — three offensive and seven defensive.

On Saturday, NWC lost to Eastern Wyoming College 72- 61. 

From the free throw line, Mc- Manamen once again shot 100 percent, going 12-for-12. Charrie McArthur and Silva also didn’t miss a free throw, each making two shots. 

As a team, the Trappers shot 90.6 percent from the free throw line, 25 percent for 3-point shots and 34.9 percent from the floor.

McManamen scored a team-high 18 points while Marlow was second with 11. 

The Northwest College women will play this weekend at the Eastern Wyoming College Tournament, facing North Platte Community College at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Eastern Wyoming College at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Central Wyoming College also competed at the First Bank of Wyoming Shootout, losing to Eastern Wyoming 90-62 and to Bismarck, 86-69.
