Trapper women split weekend games

NWC Tops Rocky Mountain JV

The Northwest College Trappers split their games to open women’s basketball season. The Trapper women won 71-53 over the Rocky Mountain JV squad on Friday, but fell 70-63 to the Montana Western JV team on Saturday.

“It’s always good to get started,” said Trapper women’s coach Janis Beal. “We definitely have some stuff to work on, but there were positives too. We played with lots of energy against Rocky and did a lot of good things. We just didn’t take care of those same things against Montana Western on Saturday.”

Former Powell Panther Leslie Thronburg had 21 points and nine rebounds to pace Northwest on Friday night against RMC. Returning scoring leader Kennedy Allen added 17 points while Leanne Winterholler and Savannah Minder also cracked double figures in the game.

Thronburg also had four assists to lead the Trappers in that category.

“Leslie had a super game on Friday,” said Beal. “Any time you can go 21 (points) and nine (rebounds) is great.”

Leslie Blackburn pulled down 16 rebounds for Northwest in the contest. The Trappers held a 50-41 rebounding edge in the contest.

On Saturday, the Trappers were out-rebounded. More important, the Trappers sent Montana Western to the line 44 times.

“That’s just not being in the right position defensively,” Beal said of the team’s high foul count. “Those are the little things we need to focus on and improve.”

Andressa Augusto had 15 points to lead the Trappers in the contest. Allen and Imari Simpson each added 11 in support. Thronburg had a team-best six rebounds while Minder accounted for four of the team’s 13 assists.

Northwest travels to Williston, N.D., this weekend. The team faces nationally-ranked North Idaho on Friday and host Williston State College on Saturday.
