Scoring Woes Continue vs. Western Nebraska
Late-season scoring woes continued to plague the Northwest College women’s soccer team at the Region IX tournament in Rock Springs. Facing a Western Nebraska team they’d defeated twice in the regular season, the Trapper women were unceremoniously ousted from play with a 2-0 defeat on Friday.
We didn’t finish our opportunities again,” said women’s coach Kaylin Olivas. “We had 10 shots on goal to their three, but they put two of their three into the net and we weren’t able to.”
Similar to the team’s final regular-season weekend in Colorado, the Trapper women were also plagued by a slow start in the contest.
“We kind of just didn’t come to play as a team,” Olivas said. “We made some mistakes and they capitalized.”
The first-year Trapper coach noted that both Western Nebraska goals came off similar sequences of events, starting with poor passing on the part of the Trappers.
“Both their goals were off counterattacks,” said Olivas. “We gave up the ball and they made a pass and caught us.”
The loss ends the Trappers’ season at 10-6 overall.
“It was a big lesson for the team,” said Olivas. “We saw a lot of opportunity this season, and that’s all I continue to see with this team and for this school. There’s still a lot of growing room here and it will be interesting to see what comes after it.
“It’s pretty frustrating right now, not just for the coaches but for the players as well. It’s hard to come off a pretty good season and then to end it like this.”
All but six members of this year’s Trapper roster will be eligible to return to the program next season.
