NWC Coach Pohlman To Be Honored For 100 Wins
A stellar fall sports season at Northwest College culminated with the recognition of three student-athletes for All- American honors and one Trapper coach for surpassing a victory milestone.
Freshman Ana Jakovljevic was named to both the NJCAA and the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association All-American rosters. Jakovljevic, who was twice selected as the national player of the week during the Trappers’ run to a Region IX North regular-season title, was a second-team selection by both organizations.
Trapper head coach Shaun Pohlman was similarly honored by the AVCA for surpassing the 100-win plateau in his coaching career. The Trappers’ coach finished the 2012 season with 103 career victories and will be honored at the Jostens Coaches’ Honors Luncheon on Dec. 13. The luncheon is part of the AVCA’s annual convention in Louisville, Ky.
On the soccer pitch, sophomore Dean Johnson was named a second-team All- American honoree. As a sophomore, Johnson helped direct the Trapper men’s soccer team to their first-ever national championship tournament appearance and district tournament championship.
The Trappers advanced to the national championship tournament in Georgia last month with a win over third-ranked Yavapai Community College, then captured the district championship the following day with a win over Western Wyoming.
Sophomore Samhia Simao was also named an All-American as part of the Trapper women’s program. Simao’s name dominates the Northwest College record book for goals scored in a single season, setting the team mark as a freshman and then bettering her own standard during her sophomore season, potentially setting a career scoring record that could remain on the record books for some time.
The Trapper women wrapped up their season one win shy of the team’s first-ever district tournament appearance.
