After a stretch of middling soccer and apparent infighting between players, the Northwest Trappers women’s soccer team seems to have turned things around.
At least that’s what the on field results would suggest. The Trappers (7-6-1, 5-3) won three games in four days, outscored their opponents 11-2 and pulled their record back above .500.
Northwest’s first three-game winning streak of the season began in Sheridan, where the Trappers blitzed the Generals’ net with 20 shots and returned home with a 3-0 win.
The Trappers did all their scoring in the first half. Sophomore Rickie Ryan scored in the fifth and 40th minutes and assisted on freshman Aline De Lima’s goal in the 20th.
Ryan led the Trappers with six shots on goal while De Lima and freshman Bridgett Schumacher each had three.
Keepers Rachel Rettinger (five saves) and Katie Duffy (two) each played a half and combined for the shutout.
Northwest returned home Friday to host the Trinidad Trojans, who the Trappers shut out 1-0 Sept. 21 in Trinidad, Colo.
It was a much higher-scoring affair this time around, as Northwest pummeled the Trojans 6-1.
De Lima scored twice on five shots while Ryan, Schumacher, freshman Amberly Halstead and freshman Angelica Silvestrone each scored once.
De Lima, Ryan, Schumacher, sophomore Alyssa Prosceno and freshman Sam McLaughin each tallied an assist.
Trinidad scored its lone goal in the second half on keeper Duffy, who made six saves.
The Trappers found themselves back in a more familiar defensive battle Saturday afternoon Otero College.
It took an overtime goal by De Lima (her second of the day and team-leading seventh of the season) to claim a 2-1 victory for Northwest.
Both teams got on the board in the first half but were unable to capitalize on their second-half chances.
Duffy kept the Trappers in the game by making eight saves. McLaughlin and Ryan each had an assist.
The women will look to keep both spirits and play at a high level this weekend in two more conference games.
Northwest will take on Western Wyoming at 2 p.m. Friday and Laramie County at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The women currently sit in third place in Region IX, one game ahead of fourth-place Trinidad.
