The Northwest College women’s soccer team failed to improve its overall record to .500 when it lost to the Western Nebraska Cougars 3-1 Sunday afternoon.
Aline De Lima was the lone Trapper to find the back of the net. The freshman scored in the 57th minute to tie the game at 1-1, but Northwest couldn’t hold on.
The Cougars scored the go-ahead goal just five minutes later and tacked on a third for good measure in the 76th minute to put the Trappers away.
“We had some chances but I think overall the result was a fair reflection of the game,” said head coach Rob Hill. “We were just flat all around.”
Hill said the Trapper women (4-6-1, 3-3) will have to improve soon if they want to make any kind of postseason run.
“With this run of home games coming we have an opportunity to turn things around,” Hill said. “It’s got to start on Wednesday.”
Northwest will have just a couple days between games to figure out how to play as a team, as tensions between players were apparent both to Sunday’s crowd and coach Hill.
“We’re going to address that this week,” Hill said. “I don’t know quite what it is yet but as soon as we figure it out we’re going to solve the problem. We’re still in a position where we can do something about it.”
Prior to Sunday’s game, the Trapper women had been alternating wins and losses. They beat Western Wyoming 4-0 Sept. 28 a day after losing to Laramie County 5-1. The weekend prior Northwest beat Trinidad 1-0 the day after falling to Otero 1-0.
Despite his team’s current issues, Hill is remaining positive the Trappers’ potential will overcome the problems.
“They’ve yet to play with intensity,” he said. “I think as soon as they do and when they click they’ll be very hard to beat.”
The Trappers will play in Sheridan Wednesday at 2 p.m. and are back home for games against Trinidad at 1 p.m. Friday and Otero at 1 p.m. Saturday..
