The Northwest College wrestlers traveled to Greeley, Colo. last week for the University of Northern Colorado Open, and three Trappers came away with finishes of sixth or better.

Freshman Anthony Varnell, fresh off an impressive win during the Trappers' 31-21 team victory over Montana State University-Northern Thursday, Nov. 15, had the Trappers highest finish during Sunday's tournament. He finished fourth in the 149-pound weight class after posting a 5-2 record. Of his wins, three came via pins.

"Anthony is a kid that's going to continue to get better," said NWC head coach Jim Zeigler. "He's made a pretty good jump since the start of the season, and he's improved a lot over the course of our first three tournaments."

Jeremy Ensley, at 125, also enjoyed another series of strong performances in his bouts, as did Corey Green at 184. Ensley posted a 3-1 record, while Green was 4-1 Sunday. Zeigler pulled both wrestlers from competition instead of letting them continue into the consolation rounds of the tournament. The move, Zeigler said, was made to ensure the health of both wrestlers for the remainder of the season.

"Both of those guys understood the decision," Zeigler said. "Corey had already been through five matches and was pretty sore. Jeremy wrestled four matches, and I just didn't want to put those guys at risk in a tournament this early in the season."

Zeigler said several other Trappers enjoyed solid performances during Sunday's event, including freshman Travis Lamborn and redshirt freshman Mason Peebles. Lamborn went 2-2 at 157, and Peebles was 3-2 at 165.

The Trapper wrestling squad currently is enjoying a week off from practice and competition. According to Zeigler, they'll return to the mats next week and begin preparing for a pair of dual matches in Montana. NWC will face the University of Great Falls Friday, Nov. 30, and MSUNorthern Saturday, Dec. 1.
