The NAEMT Geriatric Education for EMS (GEMS) course provides prehospital practitioners
with the skills and knowledge to address the unique medical, social, and environmental
challenges of older adults to improve their quality of care.
While the primary target audience is EMS professionals (EMTs, Paramedics, Nurses,
and Physicians), portions of the material can be tailored for a community of lay people
by focusing on non-clinical topics like fall prevention, recognizing signs of elder
abuse, understanding polypharmacy, and knowing when and how to activate the EMS system
for an older patient.
